Sitting · in · the · backseat...

Well, OK, three of you. But that's still three more replies than I actually expected. So this journal thingy will actually go ahead. :) Of course, at the moment I am somewhere little more romantic than the computer desk in Chislehurst, so it was probably not the best time to have this idea.

California is...a place to lose your mind in. It is a place that unites the richest, the most powerful, with the poorest and the utterly disillusioned. It's crazy, and Berkeley is a prime example. Northside, that is, North of Campus, is a rich, fashionable, tasteful and opulent home of the rich literati. Southside (where, unfortunately enough, I live) is poor, trashy, and very full of homeless people. All this in a college town where half of the students are devoted to one political cause or another, holding meeting after meeting, and staging protest after pointless protest.

Seriously, these people need to realise that there are other things than their inflated sense of righteousness in the world. My Crazy Flatmate, henceforth known as MCF, worked on a petition/protest for well over a month to get a public form altered. And this wasn't anything life changing; she wanted to have the box marked "Asian-Pacific Islander" expanded out to more, individual ethinicities. I felt like shaking her, and then gently explaining that it wasn't discrimitation that made them put that box on the form, but the fact that they'd probably run out of space.

Stupid though this story may seem, it's typical of Berkeley. Everyone's navel-gazing - there ought to be a department for it. I don't want it to seem like I hate the place - I love it for the shoes alone. There are tons of great things about Berkeley - being English is like having a VIP pass, the campus is gorgeous, mexican food is readily available, and everyone is about ten times better looking than Average Bob on the English High Street - but I can't help but feel that there is something a bit wrong with Californian society. And don't get me started on the healthcare system.

As a sort of PS, I'd like to ask a few favours -
1) Where's a good place to post fanfics? Is FF.net still a bit sucky?
2) Any good communities to be recommended?
3) Does anyone know how to make a new layout for this lj? Or does anyone know someone who does?
4) Can someone please list/link to all the old html commands for lj? Only I've forgotten them all.

Out of pure curiosity, will anyone reading this comment and tell me so? It's just I'm thinking of using this old thing to keep everyone updated on my life/writings/position in the middle of the US presidential elections, and it would be rather pointless if no one was reading it...

You know, I'm actually feeling happy. It probably isn't exactly an event, but, at the moment, I am uncomplicatedly content for no reason at all. I quite like it!

But it fucks about with your hand-eye co-ordination no end. It took me five minutes just to type that sentence...well, photo post and long details about the awesomeness that was Give It A Name when I've, y'know, had some R.E.M.

I got a message from the Muse street team today.

We are now currently mixing the new album and hopefully should be finished over the next few weeks. We'll announce the release and touring plans soon. About the album, some new songs deal with awol soldiers, Zeta Reticulans, the sound of Joe Meek's tape machine being thrown down the stairs, the private thoughts of General Zhu Chenghu, feeling strangely comfortable collecting fire wood whilst wielding an axe and of course, how to store Pasta for 12 years using nitrogen flushing.
